Norwood Hospital Offers Nutrition Resources at the Invensys Foxboro YMCA

( Foxboro , MA) Norwood Hospital is giving Foxboro Y members two new ways to learn about managing their diets for better health.

Nutrition Clinic

The hospital will hold a nutrition clinic on Wednesdays at the Y, during the hours of 9:30 am and 1:30 pm. A registered dietitian will offer nutritional consulting tailored to achieving a healthy lifestyle. The clinic begins September 22 – when members are invited to stop by and meet the program’s dietitian - Linda Davenport, RD. Cost for an initial consultation and a follow-up session is $35.

Nutrition Workshops

Free nutrition workshops will be offered from 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm on all but the last Wednesday of the month. Topics will cover a range of nutrition issues, such as childhood nutrition and reading food labels.

Diabetes Support Group

Norwood Hospital is also starting a support group for diabetes management at the Y on the last Wednesday of the month from 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm. The group will begin on September 29.

These Nutrition resources are one of several joint wellness programsnow providedby Norwood Hospital and the Hockomock Area YMCA. Other initiatives address childhood obesity, multiple sclerosis and cancer.

Information Regarding the Recent Pathology Billing Records Issue

What happened?

Carney Hospital has become aware of a potential breach of patient confidentiality by an external, independent billing agency that contracts with an independent pathology group that works with Carney Hospital. The billing agency disposed of patient billing information by sending it to a landfill, rather than destroying the information in accordance with industry standards.

We are currently investigating this matter. The security of our patients’ personal information is of the utmost importance to us. Our understanding is that the billing records that were disposed of in the landfill have been destroyed. We believe the records were sent to the landfill during a purge of old billing records at the billing company. At this time, we believe that the billing company did not regularly dispose of their records in this landfill and that this is an isolated incident.

Whose information was involved?

Our current understanding is that the potential breach is limited to pathology patients who had tissue studies conducted from 2007 though 2009. All impacted patients whose billing records were involved will be notified.

What types of information were on the documents?

The information on the documents includes names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, insurance information and in some cases diagnoses relating to the pathology tests. The documents contained no financial or credit card information.

When did Carney Hospital find out about this incident?

We learned about this situation on August 5, 2010 and immediately launched an investigation.

How can I find out if my records were improperly disposed of?

All impacted patients whose records were involved will be notified. We believe the responsibility for this notification belongs to the billing agency and the independent pathology group. Carney Hospital will work with them to ensure that all impacted patients are notified and appropriate follow-up action is taken.

Were records from the other hospitals in the Caritas system involved in this incident?

No. The independent pathology group and the billing agency did not work with any other Caritas hospitals.

Reach Out and Read Literacy Program Introduced at Holy Family's Pediatric Health Center

Norwood Hospital Launches Sleep Apnea Support Group

Norwood, MA - Norwood Hospital is starting a chapter of AWAKE - a support group for patients with sleep apnea. AWAKE, which stands for Alert, Well, And Keeping Energetic, is offered in cooperation with the American Sleep Apnea Association.

The meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 29^th, 2010 from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm in the Abraham-Sieracki Conference Room. Dr. Francis Conahan, co-medical director of the Caritas Sleep Center at Norwood Hospital, will discuss the latest sleep apnea treatments. RSVP for the meeting by calling DoctorFinder at 800-488-5959. Refreshments and raffles will be offered at this free event. Family members are also invited.

Sleep apnea is a breathing disorder in which a person experiences brief interruptions of breathing during sleep. It affects more than 12 million in the U.S. according to the National Institutes of Health. AWAKE is designed to educate patients and provide a forum for sharing information on this common disorder.

Untreated, sleep apnea can cause high blood pressure and other cardiovascular disease, memory problems, weight gain, impotency, and headaches. Moreover, untreated sleep apnea may be responsible for job impairment and motor vehicle crashes.
